New Blog Sections: I Need Your Help

You may have noticed on the bottom right hand corner of this HopeForFilm blog that I’ve started having a roll of other indie film thought bloggers — rather an ever changing list of their most recent postings.  Hopefully you already follow all of these good minds, but regardless I think they are all raising issues about making indie films that can’t be missed — and hence their inclusion on this site.  These are smart folks sharing their knowledge and musings — providing the crucial ingredients needed for the culture to work better.  I am sure there are others I should include too, so let me know of them if you find them first.

I have added a similar blog role on LMBF “Aid To Making Better Films” but could use some suggestions there.  I would also like to add curators to TheseAreThoseThings and welcome suggestions.  Issues&Actions has a good list “YouAreNeededToDoSomethingNow” but they all slant towards Net Neutrality and I could use recommendations for more general film issues.  I would like to do the same for TheNextGoodIdea (and have some ideas for that) and BowlOfNoses.  Your help is appreciated.

I’ve long dreamt of an indie film journal that wasn’t about deals or celebrity, but was about process: creative, production, and presentation — a journal that was about the Hows, and the Whys, and the How Comes?.  This is my step towards that work.  I KNOW I would read such a journal.  Would you?  Can we build it?

And while I am at it, I have another question for you.  I’ve noticed some blogs have a curated twitter follow list, providing a feed of select individuals.  Would you like me to include such a thing here on HopeForFilm or Truly Free Film?  Perhaps the same folks who blog articles are currently being featured?  Anyone I forgot? If so, please let me know why they should be included.

Just trying to make it all a little bit better, step by step, with your help and input.

How about a new section on how to stop writing, blogging, and talking about films and actually make films?

  • Dear Ted,
Thank you taking this amazing initiative. Like most of your followers, I am too a supporter of free cinema and the new digital distribution revolution. It is important to let small and independent filmmakers give the platform to promote and showcase their work. We have several journals that talk about the so called "popular" or "theatrically distributed" films but a lot of us miss out on several gems that as as good in quality and sometimes even better in terms of content. I have been trying to promote and support such films on my blog and through my production company, "Auteur Mark" where every independent filmmaker has the freedom to voice their opinion. We are very small right now but taking every step to making this big, just like Hope For Film. We too, like you hope to see a great furture for films.

  • how about a section devoted to crowdfunding stories, both successes and failures.

Hey, Ted. Once again, thank you for your commitment to indie film and all your readers! Overall, your guest post format is great, since it consolidates folks within one blog. Then, if we're really interested and want more, we can follow-up on their own sites.

My main suggestion is to continue to keep in mind the broad range of experience and stature possessed by your readers. I'm sure you have many like me who are still trying to do things for pennies and with very little industry contacts. I call us the "nobody filmmakers" or the aspiring ones. Many times posts simply are way beyond where we're at. Though it's good to read and learn for future use, it's still a bit alienating and uninspiring.

I realize you cannot reach everyone with one blog and I sure don't expect you too! :) So I'd love to contribute to your blog from more of an "aspiring" angle.

    Thank You,
    Christopher J. Boghosian

Ted, we're so with you on the point of creating "an indie film journal that wasn’t about deals or celebrity, but was about process: creative, production, and presentation — a journal that was about the Hows, and the Whys, and the How Comes?...."

We would be greatly appreciated to be included on your 'fellow thinkers list' -- link: http://cinefile.com/

    Thank you!

You're such an inspiration, Ted. I'm very grateful for the tireless work you're doing to build our community. A "process junkie" myself, I'm right there with you on wanting more resources delving into the Hows, Whys and How Comes... I devour filmmakers on filmmaking books, Inside the Actors Studio type shows, KCRW's The Business, etc... Would absolutely read the journal you envision - and I'd be interested in writing for it, as well.

I actually just wrote a blog post for jawbone.tv about an improv filmmaking process/exercise I developed with a creative partner of mine. It might be of interest to you and your readers: http://bit.ly/dFS5ps.

I always appreciate more discussion of craft. I avoid other blogs that focus too much on fundraising and not enough on how to complete the film.

As for a twitterfeed...could be useful. I tend to just glance over those on other sites.

This site could not have been built without the help and insight of Michael Morgenstern. My thanks go out to him.

Help save indie film and give this guy a job in web design or film!
