KickStarter: The Good, Bad, & Ugly

I forget again who sent me this link, but I found CoffeeAndCelluloid’s post on their KickStarter experience illuminating.

Although I have yet to engage in a crowdfunding attempt yet, I have been contemplating. And I have been providing some advice, thoughts, and general consulting to those that have. I think the points Joey Daoud raises about needing to raise a fan base first, having some investment pre-committed, and needing to have supporters, promoters, and blogs lined up in advance are all right on.  He’s helping all of us learn how to make this better together.

Joey also posted many good links to bring more perspective on the whole crowdfunding experience:

  • Hello,

My Name is Larry Thomas and I am the president and CEO of Avatara Studios a visual fx and visual media company. Avatara Studios would like to produce a Sci Fi TV/web series called Chosen for the many fans out there that have followed the TV series Heroes throughout the years. The series Chosen involves 3 main characters Orin Nathaniel Epps, Zackery Emmanuel Nolan and Gaia Olivia Dane (ONE ZEN GOD) who are one of many super enhanced abnormals who received the ability to alter reality after an experiment concerning the LHC and a massive solar flare eruption that coincided with the experiment.

The event of the experiment and the flare cause everyone who is awake on the planet to have a 2 second deja vu experience like an instant replay. Those who were asleep during the event and dreaming were given an instant reset when the quantum field from the event interacted with the DMT or Dimethyltryptamine within their pineal gland or 3rd eye giving them the ability to alter reality in a conscious state vs the dream world state.

The world soon discovers that there are abnormals among them and they are seeking out the questions to how they came to be and how to stop those who would be a threat to national security. The main characters are part of a group set out to protect those who are unaware of their abilities and to stop those in governments that are hunting down those with abnormal abilities. One of the main characters in the group has a different experience during the quantum wave event which allows him to take away the ability of any abnormal which makes him not just one of the chosen but the chosen one who can strip a person of their power.

The series has an ancient and spiritual background that leads back to the creation of the universe, the designer behind it and the battle between light and darkness over the centuries leading up to the Golden Age of man.

    THE GAME PLAN

Avatara Studios has invested nearly 20,000 dollars so far in video equipment and software to shoot this production so no money is needed for this part (see updates section). Most of the production so far has been based on out of pocket expenses. In order for us to have a primo series we need to hire some experienced special FX artist, audio engineers, camera men and actors for the production.

We could really use your help in contributions for this part of the project. Currently we have a project proposal on Kickstarter.com which has the full description and updates concerning our project. There is a list of rewards for all the contributors of the project for various contribution amounts for several pledging categories. Feel free to browse our project proposal and contribute and pass the word on this primo project

Sorry, that was supposed to be 4 figures for a children's book.

And Joey - it was definitely helpful. So - thank you. Greatly appreciated.
  • Really good post, and I guess more so - really good link. I'm currently involved in a crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter (http://bit.ly/9LWGeG) - and I can definitely agree with all of these points. If you think 'if you build it, they will come' you are 100% wrong. Occassionally, your project gets picked up by a site with a serious amount of traffic like BoingBoing, but that is a rare occurrance. I have been doing a serious amount of research on the subject and the fact is that for the large majority of projects, 80% of the funding comes from 'in network', basically friends and family.

So, do your math. Figure out how many friends and family you can guesstimate on and multiply your base reward by that and go from there. But don't stop there. You need to promote the heck out of your project. Find your niche, get on those blogs... find youtube videos of similar subjects and get on there. Whatever you can do to get the word out there. And remember, make it as easy as possible for people to support you.

I'm someone who raised 8 figures for a feature film - and I'm trying to raise 5 figures for a little children's book series... and I can honestly say that I have spent more time trying to raise the money for the book series. And I'm still only 1/3 of the way there - with 90% of that being in network. (To be fair, I produced an animated film when any animated film that came out was killing it when we started).

Do your research. Know your audience. Make sure you don't overstate your goal. When they say - start small and hope for more - heed that advice.

Good luck if you are going forward - especially you Ted. I'm pretty sure that with your following online you can make a large dent in a feature film on the lower end of budgets. Or to gap a film perhaps.
  • Thanks for all the links. I'm glad you found it interesting and hopefully it can be of help to others.

This site could not have been built without the help and insight of Michael Morgenstern. My thanks go out to him.

Help save indie film and give this guy a job in web design or film!
