Great post Louise. Good to hear the film seems to be doing well in the US. Fingers crossed. This film totally deserves to find an appreciative audience.

However one small objection re genre films supposedly not performing in Australia: I seem to recall the Mad Max films doing pretty well at home (action), ditto Wolf Creek (horror), The Man From Snowy River (period melodrama), Strictly Ballroom (musical-comedy), Cosi (putting-on-a-show comedy musical), etc.

The reason I figure The Square failed in Australia commercially is that audiences had by and large given up taking any notice of what reviewers say. And also because the original trailer and marketing campaign made the film look like a depressing drama - at exactly the point where audiences were saying they hate Oz films for being depressing dramas - instead of playing up the genre elements.

Intreresting that the film's marketing was totally re-jigged for the Aussie DVD release to capitalise on (a) its genre status as crime thriller/ film noir, and (b) Joel Edgerton's stardom. A wise move (dont know if it helped, but it certainly should have).

Great post, Louise.

Certainly American audiences are much more enthusiastic about AUSTRALIAN genre pics than Australians are; I discovered that when my film SENSITIVE NEW AGE KILLER went theatrical in Australia. Very good reviews, not so much audience support.

Americans have been weaned on genre for many, many decades. In Australia, genre films have never been seen as a legitimate form of entertainment. Some bad ones have contributed to this impression, but that's not the full story. There have been many great genre films made in Australia, too.

This is great news that THE SQUARE is being well received here. I like it a lot myself, and am heartened by its soul.

Congrats!

@FranklinQuinten

Saskia Wilson-Brown has been working on a list of theatres. And now that she has teamed up with openindie.com I am sure that list will grow to be even more comprehensive.

Check her out at www.saskiawilsonbrown.com

Speaking of audiences, does anyone have a relatively complete list of independent theaters in the U.S.? The Workbook Project and the PBS one seems to be pretty scattered (they don't even list two of the major indie theaters in Los Angeles - The Downtown Independent and The Art Theater of Long Beach).

There must be lots of lists out there, right?

Thanks for all your DIWO's love.
