Anyone who has ever viewed the classics in a room full of under 30s can only leave the theater dismayed. The inappropriate laughter, the contempt for material which doesn't evince post-modernist irony and offer up smirking knowingness -- well, one dose of such an audience is quite enough.write my thesis
This is a great list. My only suggestion would be to call it the Brave Thinkers of 2010, rather than 2009, no?

If you're looking for Brave Thinkers north of the border, I'd like to submit Kenneth Barr (www.idiomfilms.ca), for THE ACADEMY, a no-budget, DIY, truly independent film he wrote, directed, photographed, and edited. It's a labor of love, with solid performances, great action (all actors performed their own stunts) and marvelous cinematography. When the worst (and only) critique you get is "there's no name actors in it", I think you've done a hell of a good job for a DIY film.

I agree that Artemis Eternal is missing. Leaving that off is like creating a list of web video thinkers and leaving off The Guild. but now that I think about it, to cover what makes Artemis Eternal's project extraordinary might warrant it's own entry. Of course lists of any kind get more play online. ;)
A couple things on this list I hadn't heard of -- thanks for posting.

Thanks for the kind shout-out, Ted! This is a great list and we're honored to be on it. We're particularly big fans of Peter Broderick and Scott Macaulay, who gave us guidance on CHILDREN OF INVENTION. We'd also like to thank Becky Glupczynski, producer of Corey McAbee's STINGRAY SAM, for her helpful tips. Also, producer's rep Nguyen Tran, writer-director Dave Boyle (WHITE ON RICE), and Dylan Marchetti of theatrical distribution company Variance Films (http://variancefilms.com/), for their invaluable guidance on DIY distribution. These 3 guys have been doing/helping DIY efforts for several years now, and really understand how to self-release with limited resources. Last but not least, thank YOU for all your support this year! And here are the rest of the folks we'd like to thank for making 2009 a great year for CHILDREN OF INVENTION: http://childrenofinvention.com/thanks.htm (many of these folks aren't on the screen credits b/c they helped after the film was finished, with fests/promo/distrib). Thanks again and let's try to save indie film in 2010!

As I research and plan for the possibility of a DIY release of my next three feature films (Bulletface, Tales of an Ancient Empire and Road to Hell) in the first half of 2010, I've been frustrated at locating actual revenue information on the films that have been released in the various flavors of DIY.

All three films have been able to recoup production costs via foreign prebuys so I'm looking at North American release for actual profit. I am bewildered at the many options available but need hard data to make a solid business decision about which model or model hybrid represents the best path for my films. I've spent the past 29 years releasing my films via the old gatekeeper option and I'm sick and tired of it.

Any assistance in pointing me toward this data would be much appreciated.

Best,
Albert Pyun
Albert Pyun Movies / Facebook
www.talesofanancientempire.com
www.albertpyunmovies.com

For something a little less US-centric, check out David Backer, the man behind Mission X. No-money production of a really good flick. He's got a very good take on independent production and distribution.

Some "Braver Doers" (who've done the thinking & were acting on making DIY film a reality for a while now) who should be recognized on a list like this are: Rick "Feature Filmmaking At Used Car Prices" Schmidt, and Kelley "The Angry Filmmaker" Baker. I am sure I'll think of a bunch more folks soon.
But hey, good list, good idea/intention. And of course Ted belongs on this list too.

I posted this at The Wrap too :

I agree that Ted is missing from the list, but probably implied as he is the author. Also painfully missing is the Artemis Eternal project. Arguably wiser, more skilled and exciting, and with far more merit than any of the bring-your-film-to-us-for-crowdfunding or crowdsourcing sites. Artists direct with audience and no new gatekeepers (in other words, the same problems) created. The artist/filmmaker behind that big idea is JM Stover. http://www.artemiseternal.com http://www.jessicastover.com and the audience involved are a diverse group called "The Wingmen" of which I count myself one.

There are two others missing from here which also I believe arguably are of more merit, but no list is perfect and I'm glad to see some attention on the matter from someone whom the indie community respects. :-)
